4 SEO Tools and How to Use Them to Build Your Business

Search engines matter. They send traffic to your website. Use them well and they send very targeted traffic to your website. Targeted traffic turns into customers and repeat visitors. This means it’s not only where you’re placed on the search engine rankings, but the keywords you use as well. You want to make sure you’re attracting targeted traffic to your site.

The world of search engine optimization and keyword development can feel overwhelming. It seems there’s a lot of information to learn, know and use. However, when you drill down, it’s actually quite simple. You want to optimize your website for a few primary keywords. These keywords ideally will have an acceptable amount of demand and supply. They’ll also be keywords that your audience is likely to use to find your information.

Then you optimize your pages for those keywords. You also choose some secondary keywords to support the primary ones. These may be keywords with less demand and less supply. However, they’re still keywords your audience is using to find your information.

How do you use these keywords? Content, content, content. Content gives the search engine spiders something to index. It also provides material that others may link to. This is an important part of SEO.

To help you manage and master your SEO efforts, there are literally thousands of various tools and gadgets. Some of these tools help you check the keyword density on your web page. They make sure your keywords are represented enough to help but not so much that your content reads poorly. There are also link checkers, keyword research tools, and so on. Here are four SEO tools you might find useful.

#1 Keyword suggestion tools – This is where it all begins. Keyword suggestion tools help you learn and research your primary and secondary keywords. The most common of these tools is the Google AdWords tool. It’s free and quite useful. There are also keyword tools that you can pay for. They offer a bit more information than the Google tool.

#2 Ranking checkers – Ranking checkers help you determine where you rank for various keywords and search engines. It’s a great tool for setting goals and tracking your progress. For example, you might set a goal to move up two pages in the rankings using article marketing. You can use a ranking checker to test and track your success. (You can also check to see how your competition is doing.) Check out Google Rankings or iWebTool.

#3 Link checking tools – Link checking tools help you determine the effectiveness of your back links. You can learn who is linking to you and how popular their links are. Again, you can also check to see who is linking to your competition. There are some basic, free tools that provide basic information. Or you can hire a service to analyze your back links for you. Try Backlink Watch or type in backlinks: http://www.yoursite.com into a google search bar.

#4 Keyword density tools – These tools can analyze a page or your URL for keyword density. There are a number of keyword density tools. Again some are free and some are paid tools. If you’re going to pay for this service, make sure it analyzes keyword phrases and not just one or two word keywords. Try KeywordDensity.com

New SEO tools are being developed every day. Take advantage of these resources to strategically position your business. The easier it is for your prospects to find you, the faster you’ll achieve your business goals.

Kitty Rescue

I was in my garage today and up came Little Miss Blackie as I call her, a local stray who’s been around the neighbourhood for months. She’s tiny and really cute, all full of purrs and looking for attention.

I gave her a couple of pets and then heard my dog inside bark and a little streak went by me. Once it slowed down, I realized it was a tiny little filthy fluff ball of a kitten, probably no more than 4 months old. Another stray. And it’s probable that it was the offspring of Little Miss Blackie.

The kitten was definitely ferile and very skittish. I went into the house quickly and came out with some stolen food from my own Sasha’s bowl. Both the cats were all over me – starving. I managed to entice the baby to move closer and closer to me with the food and finally, I was able to catch her. I brought out Sasha’s pet carrier and popped her in there. Then, I coaxed Little Miss Blackie to get some lovin, picked her up and she was added to the cage as well – none too happy I must admit.

We don’t have an SPCA in town, but we do have a wonderfully kind and giving vet who has a cat rescue centre. I just knew that the kitties wouldn’t make it very long with the cold weather and snow coming, so we took them there.

We walked into the office and told them we had a couple of strays. Oh my, they said. It’s completely full. I talked Rob into coming with me and he said, “what would you like us to do with them?” She said she didn’t know. Cool. Then she called another lady out from the back and said we’d have to talk to her. Well, she’s a softy and couldn’t turn us away once she looked into the carrier and saw those cute little kitties looking back at her. They asked for a donation, because Dr. Sue (Dr. Susan Andrus) takes these cats in, treats, feeds and cares for them out of her own pocket. We were happy to assist. Dr. Sue’s our on vet and we simply adore her. She is amazing with our animals and it’s obvious how much she loves them.

I’ve been talking about volunteering at the Cat Rescue centre for a while now but have been reluctant because my Sasha  is 10 years old now and I’d hate to bring something nasty home to her – some kind of disease maybe. So, I was talking to the lovely gals there today, and as we chatted about the website, they said they had no one to update it and add pictures as they receive new cats. Light bulb moment! I can do that! So, I will be calling Carol, the office manager to set all that up. I’m excited to be able to help in some capacity.

I see that  the site’s down today, so I’ll have to see what we can do about that. In the meantime, if you can find it in your heart to make a small (or large) donation to the Cat Rescue Centre, I know they and the kitties would greatly appreciate it! Just send me an email to pam@pamivey.com  and I get you set up!

Does Your Website Need an Overhaul? Self-Quiz.

By

How long has it been since you sat at the computer with excitement and enthusiasm and put up your first website? A day? A week? A year? A decade?

No matter when you created it you likely missed a few things in your rush to get online. Don’t worry! We all do it. It’s similar to the ‘cobbler’s children have no shoes’ sort of deal where you never spend as much time and care on your own stuff as you do on your clients.

Well I’m here to tell you to take the time to create a good pair of shoes (err…website)!

What you need to do is look at your website objectively, like you’re a new visitor who’s never been there before. Scroll around and see what you see. Or better yet, ask your kid or your mom or your neighbour to take a look at your site and watch what they do when they get there, where they go and what questions they ask you (this works best if they’ve never been there before).

You can also take this self-quiz to see how many of the website basics you’ve got down and what you need to work on:

1. When someone comes to your website and scans your header is it clear to them what your site is about?

2. Would your tagline make total sense to a stranger on the street?

3. Are you collecting leads from your website?

4. Does every page have a purpose?

5. Is it clear what you are offering on your site? (selling a service, a product or offering free information?)

6. Are you getting found in the search engines through ‘keywords’ that your marketing is typing in?

7. Do you have an about and a contact page?

8. Are you linking to your most important social media profiles? (twitter, facebook, youtube)

9. Are you using graphics to enhance your site’s image (versus bad images that take away from your image)?

10. Can someone find out how to contact you in 10 seconds or less?

11. Is your website font easy to read and large enough for your target market?

12. Is your branding consistent?

13. Can people find what they are looking for? (You got them there, now can they get to their goal easily?)

14. Do your links stand out? (Typical linking rules are blue font, bold and underlined)

15. Is your style and colors consistent?

16. Is your content well-written and easy to understand? (No extra info – straight to the point)

17. Is your content easy to read? (Use of headlines, sub-headlines, bullets, bolding, etc)

Honestly answer all these questions and you’ll probably have a little bit of work to do.

Did you get them all right? Really? Then way to go! (…and maybe you should come partner with me! lol)

If you’re like most people and you have some work to do I’d like to offer you some help. My WordPress website design course is meant for people just like you who have a new or existing website and are ready to really unleash the power of what a website can do. To do that I offer a program that runs all year long, has been attended by over 100 people and has a track record of taking the newest of newbies and turning them into website designers.

Do You Have A Need To Be Smart? Liked? Look Good?

At my 10K Club Intensive live event last week (coaching program), we talked quite a bit about unmet needs and how they may be hindering your growth and success.

The three that really stand out for me are:

  • The need to be smart
  • The need to be important
  • The need to be liked

We all have them. But if you can identify your needs, and work to break through them, you can often free yourself to create more success in your life.

I’ll let you in on a little secret…

I SUCK at delegation. ME…someone who was a virtual assistant and virtual business manager for over 10 years, who taught my clients the art of successful delegation, is absolutely dismal at it.

And you now what I found out while working with my coach, Suzanne Evans, about it? It makes complete sense. I have the need to be smart. That means, if I delegate away some of the activities that I really shouldn’t be working on myself, someone else gets to be smart when they complete it.

Well, no more. I promised Suzanne I’d hire a new VA team that can do some of the things my stellar and long-time VA, Kathy Smith, can’t do.  And, I’ve kept that promise. I’m  now excited that I’m going to be working with Lisa Wells of Coast 2 Coast! We’re going to begin in November and she’s going to help me get a lot of things done that have just been buzzing around in my brain. You know, the kind of things that can bring in some great income but you just can’t seem to get to? So, ta-da Suzanne…I did it!

It takes a lot for me to give up control. Another surprise? Nah, not really. As a VA/VBM, I simply took control of the aspects of my client’s businesses that they weren’t good at/didn’t have time to do… It makes sense, doesn’t it? And yep, the need to be in control is another one of my needs. But I’m working hard on that one and I think you’re going to see great things come from me in the coming months because I’m relinquishing some of it!

So, how about you? What are your unmet needs and how do you think you might work through them – break past those barriers and create more success in your business and your life?
